By following the advice in this post you will learn how to confidently navigate career transitions during Midlife and reinvent yourself professionally, regardless of age. Prevent a Midlife Crisis
Act One: Midlife Is Not A Crisis, It’s A Stage.
Midlife. What does it invoke in you? Fear? Apprehension? Or, could it even be excitement? Opportunity? It’s time you stopped seeing midlife as a crisis and started viewing it as a stage. A stage where wisdom, not years, takes center stage. Think about it. You’ve spent decades honing skills, overcoming obstacles, navigating personal and professional challenges.
This stage isn’t about fading into the backdrop. No, no no. It’s your turn in the spotlight. You’re not the understudy in this production, you’re the leading lady. The script? Yours to rewrite. The part? Yours to recast. And the applause? Yours to earn. Remember, the best actors are those who reinvent themselves, surprising audiences with their versatility and range.
Midlife & The Power to Pivot
Now, let’s talk about the ‘Second Act’. Often, it carries a negative connotation. But should it? Consider this: your ‘Second Act’ isn’t a downgrade. It’s a sequel. And everyone knows, the sequel can easily surpass the original.
Life, just like a career, isn’t a linear path. It’s a series of turns, pivots, and leaps. You’ve got the power. The power to pivot. The power to redefine. The power to become more than you ever imagined.
Think about the greatest stories ever told. What makes them memorable? Is it the predictable, or is it the unexpected? The turns in the plot, the surprising character development, the unforeseen triumphs. These are what make a story memorable. And your career, your life, is the most important story you’ll ever tell.
‘Action Always Precedes Confidence’
Harness Your Potential During Midlife
The journey of reinvention is the journey to reach the untapped corners of your potential. What’s the greatest untapped resource in the world? It’s not oil. It’s not gold. It’s potential. Your potential.
Unlock it. Harness it. Make it work for you. Because your potential is limitless. It’s like buried treasure, waiting to be unearthed. And the best part? You hold the map.
With every new skill you learn, every challenge you overcome, every fear you conquer, you’re tapping into your potential. And just like a well, the more you draw from it, the more it replenishes.
The Audacity of Age
Now, let’s talk about age. It’s just a number, but it’s also a badge of honor. A testament to your resilience. Your experience. Your wisdom. You’re not just getting older, You’re getting better.
With age comes audacity. The audacity to dream. The audacity to change. The audacity to succeed. And let’s not forget, the audacity to fail. Because failure isn’t the opposite of success. It’s a part of it. Age isn’t a barrier. It’s a stepping stone. A stone that leads you to new opportunities, new horizons, new successes.
Take Anne Boden in the UK, the co-founder and now ex-CEO of Starling Bank. Anne, now in her 60s, was in her mid-50s when she reinvented herself from a corporate ladder-climber into an all-or-nothing entrepreneur.
Anne founded Starling, the digital-only bank that has become mold-breaking. It has stolen a march on customers from big lenders, turned a profit and is a rare British “unicorn” in the fintech industry, worth £2.5bn at its most recent fundraising. Giving Boden herself a net worth of about £125mn. Pretty amazing for a woman in her midlife to go for it like that. I am so impressed by her and the fact that she did this in her 50s really inspires me!
Midlife Means It’s Your Turn to Shine.
So, here you are. At the end. But is it really the end? Or is it the beginning? The spotlight’s on you. This is your stage. Your show. Your moment. Don’t fade into the shadows. Step forward. And shine.
In this grand theater of life, the final act is up to you. Rewrite your script. Recast your part. And when the curtain falls, let it fall on a standing ovation. Because you didn’t just play your role. You owned it.
Embrace your midlife power. Make those bold moves. Shake off your self-doubt and remember, you are not defined by your age, but by your actions. Your courage. Your resilience.
The choice is up to you. The pen is in your hand. The page is blank, waiting for your words. So, step forward. Break a leg. Because the stage is set for your entrance. Your midlife reinvention. Your fearless career move. Age is just a number. But courage, ambition, resilience, these are timeless. These are the true measures of a life well lived.
My Nugget Of Wisdom
You know, I’ve always resonated with Robin Sharma’s principle of “Fear is a sign that you’re about to grow.” Similar to the ‘dark night of the soul’ stuff. I like spinning a wheel on this notion whenever I’m in a funk or at a crossroads. The last one was this, Voyage & Soap 2.0. I was afraid to take any action for like at least 2 years, of upping the ante on my career in midlife.
It’s tempting to view age as a limitation, I did it myself and it’s taken some real soul-searching to come out of it. I genuinely believe now that age is just a number. Sharma’s wisdom helped me realize that fear wasn’t a red light signaling me to stop; instead, it was an indication that I was on the brink of a significant transformation.
I remember feeling so overwhelmed, so often. Being a solo mom, being the breadwinner, making ALL the decisions, not doing enough of the stuff that feeds me, like meditation and yoga and eating well. All the good self care things I know I needed to do but just wasn’t doing because of the overwhelm. I was so tired all the time. So I stopped drinking alcohol and caffeine and my energy turned around. Then I turned my ‘SHOULDS’ into “MUSTS. ’ Thank you Tony Robbins.
Next up I returned to my yoga mat and practiced consistently. Short, I only do 35 minutes a day now but I do it. And the same with meditation I do it, only 10 minutes but I do it. Those four things motivated me to eat clean again, no junk, not too much sugar. It’s like a snowball effect. Start small, but start. Action precedes confidence. Embracing this fear was my breakthrough moment.
After a few months of this better version of me I mustered the courage to take the plunge and relaunch and pivot Voyage & Soap from a wellness platform to what it is today. It was a really scary leap. I kept thinking who am I in my late 40s to put her voice out there? To relaunch a whole new business? To serve women with ALL the tools, methods and experience I had gained in my 25 year career as a yoga and meditation teacher, a wellness expert and a transformation consultant?
Oh yes I had imposter syndrome at epidemic levels. But taking those first steps was the key, turning my shoulds into musts was the key. After that, everything snowballed and the universe kept introducing people and stuff that helped me get to the next level. Bit by bit.
So if you are in or entering or scared to enter midlife. If you are standing on the edge of a career shift and feeling that twinge of fear, remember, that’s just your sign of impending growth. You’re ready to fly.
